(All the videos of origami are of the origami I have done)

In this blog, we are going to be talking about origami and learn about the history

by asking a few questions: What is origami? What’s the history of origami? How do you do origami? I think this is going to be a lot of fun and I hope you enjoy it.

What is origami?

“Origami” is a noun, meaning: The Japanese art of folding paper into decorative shapes and figures. I, myself, like to do origami. I consider myself quite good. Origami can range from being really hard to very simple, but it doesn’t matter if you’re a beginner or an expert, it can still be fun! To do modern origami you need a square sheet of paper with no cuts, glue or markings. During the folding process some origami occasionally does use glue or scissors, but as a general rule, it can’t be cut or glued to be origami. As for the paper, it needs to be quite thin and a perfect square, so you can’t use cardboard paper because it is too thick and also shaped like a rectangle.

What is the history of origami?

Experts think origami got started when Buddhist monks brought paper to Japan from China, about 500 years after the Chinese invented it in the year 100 CE.

The earliest forms of origami were made by monks, and then the elite because paper was expensive and regular people couldn’t afford it. We know that origami was probably used in ceremonies before people started doing it for pleasure. In 1680 AD an origami butterfly was mentioned in a poem. Later in the 1950s Friedrich Froebel, who, fun fact, is also the inventor of Kindergarten, saw origami as having educational value and with his journals spread origami around the world. Also in the 1950s, Lillian Oppenheimer helped popularize origami and even founded The Origami Center of America in 1958. She also wrote books and made a TV show teaching people about origami! Since then, origami has grown in popularity, and has been used in so many different ways other than just for art, but I won’t bore you with that exhaustive list right now.

How do I make origami?

Now that you know all about the history of origami, I bet you are wondering, “How can I get started?” I’m going to be showing you how in the videos I mentioned at the top. I hope you enjoy them.

Fun facts

The largest collection of origami frogs numbered 3542. This ginormous collection is in Japan and the record was made on 16 September 2019.🐸
